Marie Violay portrait
Marie Violay Associate Professor
Laboratory of Experimental Rock Mechanics
EPFL, Switzerland

Marie Violay is an Associate Professor at EPFL specializing in rock mechanics, where she also leads the Laboratory of Experimental Rock Mechanics.

After earning her PhD in geology from the University of Montpellier, she pursued postdoctoral research at INGV Rome for two years, followed by serving as a lab head at ETH Zurich for an additional two years.

Her research is dedicated to understanding the mechanical processes and fluid-rock interactions within the Earth's crust, with a particular focus on deep geothermal energy, brittle to ductile transition and earthquakes.

Alexandra Kushnir Research and Teaching Associate
Rock Physics and Geofluids Laboratory
EPFL, Switzerland

Alexandra Kushnir is a Research and Teaching Associate and the head of the Rock Physics and Geofluids Laboratory at EPFL in Lausanne.

She has used experimental techniques, including rock and magma deformation under in situ pressure and temperatures conditions to understand the structure and behaviour of Earth materials.

The majority of her research focusses on permeability evolution, with an emphasis on how rock-fluid interactions change fluid flow in the Earth's crust over time.

Michael Heap Professeur (full professor) at EOST
University of Strasbourg, France

Mike Heap is a Professor at the University of Strasbourg in France. He is principally an experimentalist who specialises in the physical properties, mechanical behaviour, and failure modes of porous rocks.

Mike's current research focusses on volcanic rocks and, in particular, how fluid-rock interactions influence volcanic rocks and the hazards posed by volcanoes.
